Buddha tells us how to practice yoniso manasikāra, or appropriate attention. The first habit to develop is sati, or focusing your attention -- but this alone is not enough. The second habit is sampajañña, or being aware of the movements of your thoughts and your body -- but even sati and sampajañña together are not enough. It is not until you have ātāpi (four right exertions), or the persistence in continuously developing skillful habits, abandoning unskillful ones, generate desire for the non-emerged skillful habits and produce the need for the non-emerging unskillful ones, that you may exhibit yoniso manasikāra. Yoniso manasikāra leads one to wisdom/Insight (paññā).
