Socially Engaged Buddhism in Contemporary South Korea | Bhante Dr. Gangodawila Chandima and Dr. Hyekyung Jee

Dear Dhamma Friends,

Stay tuned for Saturday morning as we continue with our Dhammapariyesanā series #53.

Please join host Bhante Dr. Chandima for an interview with Dr. Hyekyung Jee (Lucy) about the distinctiveness and new directions of Socially Engaged Buddhism in Contemporary South Korea. While some may agree with the notion that Asian Buddhism is primarily a meditative route, the works of socially engaged Buddhism demonstrate that this is not the case, since numerous humanitarian and social activities have occurred with the backing of outstanding teachers and followers, particularly in South Korea.

Lucy Hyekyung Jee is a researcher in the K-academic expansion center of Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, South Korea and teaches introductory courses on Korean culture, Buddhism, and philosophy at Kyunghee University, Seoul, South Korea. Her research interests include Buddhism in East Asia, modern Korean Buddhism, engaged Buddhism, and Buddhism as a therapeutic philosophy. She published “Application of Zen Rhetoric to Daily Issues: The Case of “Conversation with Pŏmnyun” in English and more articles in Korean regarding her subject of interest. She also contributed an entry to the Wiley-Blackwell Encyclopedia of Philosophy of Religion titled "Korea, Buddhist Philosophy." Dr. Hykyunge is currently focusing her research on Minjung Buddhism, a form of engaged Buddhism practiced in Korea.
