Maṅgala Sutta
(Blessings)

1. Evaṁ me sutaṁ
This is what I heard.

2. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme
At one time the Blessed One was dwelling near Sāvatthi, at Anāthapiṇḍika’s grounds in Jeta’s Wood.

3. Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami;
Then a certain deity, at the end of the night, having lit up the whole of Jeta’s Wood with his surpassing beauty, approached the Blessed One,

4. upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi—
and after approaching and worshipping the Blessed One, he stood on one side. While standing on one side that god recited this verse to the Blessed One:

5. Bahū devā manussā ca,
Many are the deities and the men

maṅgalāni acintayuṁ;
who have thought about the blessings

Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ,
hoping for safety:

brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṁ.
now please say what is a supreme blessing.
