-The literal meaning of Nibbāna ; Extinction? Blowing Out? Extinguishment?
vâna, derived from the root word √vā which means "to blow". nirvana then means "to blow out"

1. What is Nibbāna? the extinction of the "three fires". When these fires are extinguished, release from saṃsāra, the perpetual grasping activity of the mind, or the cycle of rebirth, is attained.

Paññā-vimutti (freedom through understanding (wisdom))
An Arahant who is liberated by wisdom has realised the four Noble Truths of universal suffering, origin of dukkha, cessation of dukkha and the path leading to the cessation of dukkha through the practice of insight meditation and has totally eradicated all the mental in-fluxes (āsavas). However, in terms of concentration meditation, they would only develop one or more of the four fine material deep absorption states (rūpa jhāna) and will not go on to develop any of the formless states (arūpa jhāna).
-"These two qualities have a share in clear knowing. Which two? Tranquillity (samatha) & insight (vipassanā).Dve·me, bhikkhave, dhammā vijjā-bhāgiyā. Katame dve? Samatho ca vipassanā ca.
"When tranquillity is developed, what purpose does it serve? The mind is developed. And when the mind is developed, what purpose does it serve? Passion is abandoned.Samatho, bhikkhave, bhāvito kam-attham-anubhoti? Cittaṃ bhāvīyati. Cittaṃ bhāvitaṃ kam-attham-anubhoti? Yo rāgo so pahīyati.
"When insight is developed, what purpose does it serve? Discernment is developed. And when discernment is developed, what purpose does it serve? Ignorance is abandoned. Vipassanā, bhikkhave, bhāvitā kam-attham-anubhoti? Paññā bhāvīyati. Paññā bhāvitā kam-attham-anubhoti? Yā avijjā sā pahīyati."
Defiled by passion, the mind is not released. Defiled by ignorance, wisdom does not develop. Thus from the fading of passion is there mind-release. From the fading of ignorance is there wisdom-release."Rāgupakkiliṭṭhaṃ vā, bhikkhave, cittaṃ na vimuccati, avijj·upakkiliṭṭhā vā paññā na bhāvīyati. Iti kho, bhikkhave, rāga-virāgā cetovimutti, avijjā-virāgā paññāvimuttī.

Ubhato-bhāga vimutti (freedom by both ways)
An Arahant liberated by both ways has attained liberation by wisdom through the practice of insight meditation to realise the four Noble Truths and to eradicate mental defilements and has also developed the formless deep absorption states through concentration meditation. Having first developed the four fine material absorption states (rupa jhāna) they continue to develop the four formless states (arupa jhāna).Ceto-vimutti becomes permanent, only with the attainment of paññā-vimutti.

"Their past (kamma) is spent, their new (kamma) no more arises, their mind to future becoming is unattached. Their germ (of rebirth-consciousness) has died, they have no more desire for re-living. Those wise men fade out (of existence) as the flame of this lamp (which has just faded away). This precious jewel is the Sangha. By this (asseveration of the) truth may there be happiness.
