(Minor Texts)

Nidhikaṇḍa Sutta
(the Reserve Fund)

1. Nidhiṁ nidheti puriso,
A man stores his funds (savings)

gambhīre udakantike;
in a deep pit close to water thinking:

Atthe kicce samuppanne,
“When a duty or need has arisen

atthāya me bhavissati.
it will be there to help me,

2. Rājato vā duruttassa,
to free me from a king if slandered, or from molestation

corato pīḷitassa vā;
or from a thief if harassed,

Iṇassa vā pamokkhāya,
or to release me from debt,

dubbhikkhe āpadāsu vā;
or famine, or accident.”

Etadatthāya lokasmiṁ,
For this kind of help,

nidhi nāma nidhīyati.
funds (savings) are stored up in the world.
